Your First Brazilian Sugaring
How to prep, what to expect, and what to skip after — honestly, from your future sugarist.
Coming in for your first Brazilian is a big deal. Or it’s a small deal. It depends on the day, your mood, and whether you’ve spent the last week doom-scrolling Reddit threads about it. Either way — we’ve got you.
Here’s everything we’d tell a friend before her first Brazilian sugaring appointment. What to do the week before, the morning of, and what to skip for a couple of days after. Honest, useful, no scare tactics.
To prep for your first Brazilian sugaring: stop shaving for at least two weeks so you have about a quarter inch of growth, gently exfoliate 24–48 hours before, skip retinol or chemical exfoliants on the area for a few days, and arrive freshly showered with no lotion or oil applied. Loose, comfy clothes are your friend afterward.
The hair length question
Sugaring needs about a quarter inch of hair to grip — roughly two weeks of growth past your last shave.
Less than that and the paste won’t have enough to grab onto, which means a patchy result and faster regrowth. More than that is fine — we’ll just trim it down a bit before we start. So if you’re tempted to shave the day before because you’re nervous about how it looks, please don’t. We promise.
If you’ve been waxing, the same rule applies: stop at least two weeks before your appointment.
Your prep timeline at a glance
A week before
A few small things in the days leading up make a real difference:
- Stop shaving immediately. The big one.
- Pause retinol, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid in the bikini area for 3–5 days before. They thin the surface of the skin and make sugaring more sensitive.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds on the area in the 48 hours prior. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is more reactive.
- Stay hydrated. Dry skin is more sensitive skin. Boring advice, real effect.
If you have a sensitive skin condition — eczema, psoriasis, anything reactive — text us before you book. We can usually still work with you; we may just want to adjust timing.
24–48 hours before
This is the prime exfoliation window. Use a gentle physical scrub or a soft washcloth in the shower to lift dead skin off the bikini area. Just enough to feel smooth — not enough to feel raw. It makes a noticeable difference in how clean the removal feels and helps prevent ingrown hairs down the road.
Skip any chemical exfoliants the day before or day of. Gentle physical exfoliation, then leave the area alone.
The morning of your appointment
A handful of practical small things:
- Shower before you come. Clean skin grips paste better. No need to scrub anything — just a normal shower.
- Skip lotions, oils, and deodorant on the bikini area. They create a barrier the paste can’t get through.
- Eat something. Coming in on an empty stomach can make sensation feel sharper. A real meal an hour or two before is ideal.
- If you’re anxious, take ibuprofen or Tylenol about 30–45 minutes before. It takes the edge off, and it’s a thing many of our regulars quietly do.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Skip thongs, tight jeans, and shapewear that day. A flowy dress or soft pants is your best friend.
- Caffeine is debatable. Some people find it makes them more sensitive; others don’t notice. Drink your coffee if you want it — maybe just don’t double up.
First-time nerves are real, and they almost always melt by the second appointment. If you have a specific question you’d rather not say out loud, text us. We answer every message ourselves.
A few honest answers to questions you might be quietly Googling
“Should I groom or trim down there before I come in?”
Please don’t. We’ll handle any trimming if needed. Cleaning up at home before a Brazilian is like vacuuming before the cleaner arrives — sweet, but unnecessary.
“What if I’m on my period?”
You can absolutely come in on your period — just wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup. Skin tends to be a touch more sensitive the day or two before, so if you have scheduling flexibility, factor that in.
“What if I’m self-conscious about… anything?”
We have done this thousands of times. Bodies are bodies — yours is not unusual, not surprising, not anything we’re going to think twice about. Whatever you’re worried we’ll notice, we promise we won’t.
“Will I bleed?”
Sometimes a few stubborn hairs leave tiny pinprick spotting on the way out, especially the first time. It’s small, normal, and gone in a few minutes. Not something to worry about.
“Should I take anything before?”
Ibuprofen or Tylenol 30–45 minutes ahead is the most common pre-appointment habit. We don’t recommend numbing creams — they make skin slick and harder to work with, and the relief isn’t proportional to the hassle.
What the appointment is actually like
You’ll come in, fill out a quick first-visit form (less paperwork than a dentist, more chai than a doctor’s office), and head into the room. We’ll step out, you’ll undress from the waist down, lie on the table with a soft towel over you, and let us know when you’re ready.
Then we’ll talk you through what we’re doing the whole time. You’ll change positions a few times — knees up, knees to one side, then the other. The whole appointment usually runs 30 to 45 minutes for a first Brazilian. It gets quicker as your hair gets thinner and your nervous system relaxes into the rhythm of it.
The first appointment is almost always the most intense. By your third or fourth, most clients tell us they barely notice anymore — and they’ve started looking forward to the visit itself.
What to skip for 24–48 hours after
The post-appointment window is the only thing you really need to plan around:
- Skip hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and steam rooms for 24 hours. Lukewarm water only.
- Skip workouts that make you sweat for the rest of the day.
- Skip sex for 24–48 hours. Skin is in a tender just-cleaned state.
- Skip tight clothes for the rest of the day. Same reason.
- Skip sunbathing and tanning for 48 hours.
- Don’t exfoliate for 48 hours, then start again gently from day three onward to keep ingrowns at bay.
Moisturize lightly with a fragrance-free lotion if your skin feels dry. That’s the whole post-Brazilian routine — be a little gentler with yourself for two days.
How often to come back
For Brazilians, the sweet spot for most people is every 4 to 5 weeks. That keeps your hair on a synced growth cycle so each appointment is more efficient and more comfortable than the last.
The first three or four appointments are the most transformative — that’s when hair starts coming in finer, more sparsely, and on a more predictable schedule. Plenty of our regulars stretch their visits to 5 or 6 weeks once they’ve settled into a rhythm.
Why we sugar Brazilians at our Encinitas studio
A Brazilian is the kind of appointment where the how matters as much as the what. We’re a small, family-owned studio in Encinitas — sugaring only, no waxing on the menu. Since 2019 we’ve spent a lot of time refining one thing: how to make a Brazilian feel genuinely calm. Quiet music, warm room, no rush.
If you’re new to sugaring entirely, our sugaring vs. waxing guide walks through how the methods differ and why we made the choice we did. If we’re new to you, our first-time clients page covers the practical bits.
Our clients across Encinitas and North County San Diego have left us 34 five-star Yelp reviews — most of them from people who came in nervous about their first Brazilian and walked out booking the next one.
Frequently asked, honestly answered
How long does hair need to be for a Brazilian sugaring?
About a quarter inch — roughly two weeks past your last shave. Sugaring can grab shorter hair than waxing can, which is one reason regulars find their appointments easier over time.
Should I shave before my first Brazilian?
No. Stop shaving at least two weeks before so the paste has enough hair to grip. If your hair is longer than necessary, we’ll trim it down ourselves before we start.
Should I exfoliate before a Brazilian sugaring appointment?
Yes — gently, 24 to 48 hours before. Skip chemical exfoliants like glycolic or salicylic acid in the few days leading up. After your appointment, wait 48 hours before exfoliating again.
Can I get a Brazilian on my period?
Yes. We just ask that you wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup. Skin can be slightly more sensitive the day or two before your period, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
Does Brazilian sugaring hurt?
The first appointment has the most sensation — there’s no way around that. Most clients describe it as a quick tug rather than a sharp rip, and it eases significantly by the second or third appointment as hair grows in finer.
What should I do after a Brazilian sugaring?
For 24 to 48 hours: skip hot showers, saunas, intense workouts, sex, sun, and tight clothing. Moisturize gently with a fragrance-free lotion if needed. Start light exfoliation again on day three to prevent ingrowns.
